County Line Special Utility District will conduct sanitary sewer smoke testing in selected areas of Las Estancias 2 as part of our ongoing effort to maintain a reliable wastewater collection system.

The testing helps identify sources of inflow and infiltration, commonly called I&I. This occurs when stormwater or groundwater enters the sanitary sewer system through cracked pipes, deteriorated manholes, improper connections, or other defects.

Finding and correcting these issues improves system reliability, reduces unnecessary treatment costs, and helps protect the environment.

What to Expect During Testing

During testing, a non-toxic, non-staining, and non-hazardous smoke will be introduced into the sanitary sewer system. The smoke is designed specifically for sewer testing, is safe for people, pets, and plants, and typically dissipates within about 8 minutes.

It is normal to see smoke coming from the following areas:

  • Roof vent stacks
  • Manholes
  • The ground where sewer defects exist

Will Smoke Enter My Home?

Under normal conditions, smoke should not enter your home. Water-filled plumbing traps, also known as P-traps, beneath sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains help prevent smoke from entering indoor spaces.

If smoke does enter your home, it may indicate a plumbing issue, such as a dry drain trap, defective plumbing vent, or damaged sewer connection. Although the smoke is harmless, please notify the testing personnel or County Line SUD so the issue can be identified.

If a Problem Is Identified

If smoke testing identifies a potential source of inflow and infiltration on private property, County Line SUD will notify the property owner, explain the findings, and provide information about possible corrective actions.

Before Testing

To help ensure your plumbing system functions properly before testing begins, please take the following steps:

  • Run water into sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains that are not used regularly to ensure all drain traps contain water.
  • If you have concerns about your plumbing system, consider having it inspected before testing begins.
